Job shadowing is a career exploration activity that offers an opportunity to spend time with a professional currently working in a person’s career field of interest. Job shadowing offers a chance to see what it’s actually like working in a specific job. Not only do job shadowers get to observe the day-to-day activities of someone in the current workforce, they also get a chance to have their questions answered.

Job shawdowing also offers you a chance to ask questions about the job, its challenges, and the people who do it.  If you find yourself in a job shadowing situation, here are  some questions that you should ask:

1.    What do you like most about your job?

2.    What do you like least about your job?

3.    If you could be in a different business, what would it be?

4.    How many hours a week do you work?

5.    Do you work on weekends?

6.    What is the salary range for this position?

7.    What are the opportunities for career advancement in this field?

8.    What type of training did you receive?

9.    Where did you get the training?

10.  How did you get this position?

11.  What do you like most about work at a (big/small) company?

12.  What other careers are available in this industry or with your background?

13.  What does your company look for when hiring new employees?

14.  What skills do you need for this position? How did you obtain these skills?

15.  How important is previous work experience?

16.  Do you think good communication skills are important to your job? Why?

17.  What kind of “people skills” do you use in this position?

18.  Do you think networking skills are important? Why?

19.  What is the best way for me to develop those skills?

20.    At what age, do you think I should start developing those skills?

21.    What do you think are the keys to success?

22.    What is the best way for an adolescent to make business contacts?

23.    What is the best way for adolescents to learn about different types of jobs?
