Tips to Make a Job Fair Work for You

Allow yourself plenty of time. Visit with all of the employers. Even if you don't think you are interested in a particular employer, you may learn something about opportunities you weren't aware of.

Update your resume and make sure that it's "letter perfect." Bring several copies with you to the fair. Don't be shy! Be assertive and show initiative. Shake hands and introduce yourself to each employer. Speak up and make eye contact.

Bring a pen with you.

Know the addresses and phone numbers of your references and previous employers.

Listen carefully and gather whatever information you can. Pick up business cards and jot down notes to help you remember your conversation with each company representative. Help yourself to any free company literature.

Think of your strong points, your goals, the company and where you would fit within the company. Be prepared to discuss what you like doing, what you're looking for in a job and your most relevant skills. Condense these points into a "one-minute commercial" about yourself. Remember, this is not an interview. It is your opportunity to make a crucial first impression.

Dress neatly and do not wear a hat or cap. Finish eating or drinking and throw gum away before approaching employers.

Be enthusiastic. Employer surveys say enthusiasm is the single most important attribute a new employee can bring to a new position. So smile and project interest in the company.

Follow up with employers. A phone call, visit or short note proves your interest and may move your application to the top of the pile or get you an interview.
