Dreamfedjob - Turning unemployed into employed.
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Department of Defense (DoD) provide eligible veterans with opportunities to obtain training and practical work experience that will help them qualify for federal positions.
  • VA administers Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (VR&E) programs.
  • DoD administers the Operation Warfighter program.
VA Vocational Rehabilitation & Employment Program

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) established the VR&E program to help qualified veterans attain job skills through an on-the-job training program.

Eligible veterans are primarily those receiving compensation for a disability rating of 20% or more. A VA case worker will determine the veterans' eligibility.

The veteran will receive a Certificate of Training after successfully completing the program. This certificate allows any federal agency to non-competitively appoint the veteran to the type of job he/she was trained to perform.

Non-Paid Work Experience (NPWE)

The VA's NPWE program is a "win-win" for both the veteran and the employer:
  • The eligible veteran gets on-the-job training and practical work experience while receiving a salary stipend from the VA.
  • "Non-Paid" means the program does not cost anything to the employer.
A VA Case Manager is assigned to work with the veteran and the employer. The Case Manager matches the veteran to the right employer and monitors the veterans' progress to ensure that all training goals are met.

Enrollment in the program may lead to continuing employment at the job site after completion of the training program.

Operation Warfighter (OWF)

DoD's Operation Warfighter is very similar to VA's VR&E program, except that the participant is still on active duty.
  • OWF participants are wounded, ill or injured service members convalescing at military treatment facilities. Participants work part-time. Duty schedules are flexible and do not interfere with the participants medical treatment.
  • OWF participants can explore career interests, develop job skills and gain valuable federal work experience.
  • OWF Program Managers maintain a résumé database of service members interested in participating in the program.
  • Work experience gained in this program can help participants obtain federal civilian employment after discharge from military service.
